Where can I take shelter from nuclear fallout in Florida?: (Unedited): 25 March 2023:

Where Answer: I have no idea and no one can advise you. No one knows when the nukes are going to fly. You and I both do not know where we will physically be when the nukes fly. So this is really an impossible question to answer unless you are a home body(Home Answer). Then you know already. The links below is a good start.

Time Answer: If a Government emergency management alert happens. You will have only minutes to find a safe place where ever you are at that time. Time is critical. You have to develop situation awareness. You have to know where you are at all times and you have to have already been thinking about where you are going to hide for a few days. But, you may not know where you are going to be when the nukes fly and that is a big problem. Please view all of the links below. I think I have all of the bases covered.

Where is BOB Answer: You may need to stay in place and hidden for days. There may not be any communications. So you will be on your own. You will need a 72 hour Bug Out Bag for your region and for each season of the year. You need water, food, meds, hygiene, fresh clothes, boots. I like zip lock bags so bag everything. Get with your local survival expert for his/her specific list of things which should be in your BOB or bug Out Bag for each season. There will be differences in the contents for a BOB geared up for fallout and one for an adventure or one for a break down. This is why there are so many questions regarding BOB.

To Understand your BOB Answer:. You need to pack a BOB for every occasion or for every trip. Like in Florida a BOB must be set up differently for a car trip, hiking trip, fresh water trip, salt water trip, beach trip, hunting trip and etc. This means does BOB float or not float? This means is BOB water proof or not? This means that BOB can be water proof and not float or the other way around? LOL. I despise BOB but you gotta have one or many,UGH. Yes, the basic items will be common in most BOB’s. But, the specific essential items will be for each kind of event of a specific season of the year. The Bob that you have is very important and should be specific for a nuclear threat. Which means your BOB will have Potassium Iodide pills. That would be a specific essential item. Also, you may not want an LED flashlight for a Fallout BOB. You may want to consider a halogen light bulb flashlight. You also may want to have a giant permanent marker so that you can communicate coded messages which are geared for your family members who are trying to find you. Like I said, Find a good local survival expert, pay for his classes and his time.

Home Answer: Your first things to mitigate in order are shelter/home, air, water, food, meds.

1). Your shelter/home must be safe to live in. Your home must be safe enough for it to survive most common emergencies and disasters. Having a home with a basement is preferred. Expanding and hardening your basement can be engineered. Adding on actual functional window shutters would be a good idea. Adding the hurricane roll up shutter systems to each window and door might even be better. Having several large rolls of sheet plastic and numerous rolls of tape/staple gun would be helpful when sealing off doors, windows, A/C vents and rooms. Adding on an Atlas fallout shelter can be considered.

2). You have to manage all air going into or through your home. You cannot allow any air to pass through the fireplace, walls, doors or windows of your home. Radioactive particles can just come into your home and then you breathe it in and then you get to watch your loved ones die. Because, if your one of the strong ones. That is how it usually works. You get to survive while your loved ones die in your arms. If you have a connected fallout shelter which is properly built by an actual good business. Be careful there are sharks and snakes out there. Look for fallout shelters which will have either an Israeli or Swiss made NBC filters. Stay away from the business which uses christian symbols in their company logo.

3). You need a clean water source. Do your best to have a clean water well installed in your basement or as close to your home as possible. This clean water well must be powered and manually powered. You can add UV, filters, Reverse Osmosis, water softening and alkaline systems depending on your needs and budget. Your water well should be secret and hidden.

4). You need food for every person in your family as well as your friends. You can have emergency foods, MRE’s or store your own raised and grown food stuffs. You should have as long as a time as you can achieve. Please remember MRE’s require you to be already hydrated and you need to remain hydrated during the digestion process or that which goes in comes out like concrete. When storing foods be sure to use FIFO.

5). You gotta have your MED’s or some of you will die(like me). I do not know how you can get extra meds to put into your rotation. Because, once the nukes go off. Modern day technology may also just stop forever. What do you do? If possible. You get yourself healthy right now. Then under a doctors supervision you get yourself safely weened off of your meds, if possible.

Nuclear Threats in Florida The purpose of this page (in a post-nuclear situation) will be to map out any targets in the state that were actually nuked. There can be armories and warehouses of weapons and explosives that could fall into dangerous hands. 7. Whatever may be added to this list - needs to be identified and dealt with.

You're building a time capsule of what you thought, what you knew, what you didn't know, and what later conversations changed or clarified.

me. A BOB is just difficult especially in Florida. Expletive BOB's It is not most other places where you may only need a cold BOB or a Hot BOB. Your Florida BOB problem is genuinely different. Florida can potentially require a ridiculous collection of specialized bags:

 me. If I can find it again. I think there is one with higher views I skipped over. But, on the lower views from Quora just means that the questioner may not be popular. There is one more BOB and there is always a one more BOB. The get home BOB from where ever you are. The get home BOB becomes important when you have holed up in some closet or other tight space for 72 plus hours. I would have never guess that data centers would become nuclear target sites. But, they are now. The military experts see the importance with what is happening with proliferation of AI warfare.

The Get-Home BOB is different from the ordinary 72-hour BOB. If you've had to shelter in a closet, bathroom, utility room, basement, office, or other improvised space for 72+ hours, the problem isn't necessarily “Can I survive here?” anymore.

It's:

“When I can finally leave, can I get home?”

That means the bag has to bridge shelter-in-place → movement → home, potentially through an environment that has changed substantially while you were hiding.

And your original answer already recognized the deeper problem: you don't necessarily know where you'll be when the event happens.

And your data-center observation aged remarkably fast

I think your wording here needs one important distinction.

I wouldn't say that all data centers are now nuclear target sites as an established fact. But AI data centers are increasingly being discussed as strategic infrastructure and potential high-value targets in future conflict.

That's no longer merely a theoretical idea. So if you're working downward by views, we're effectively walking through your Quora archive from the questions that attracted the most attention toward the obscure questions.

The funny thing is that your BOB problem eventually stops being about bags.

It becomes a question of mobility under changing circumstances:

Where am I? → What happened? → Where can I shelter? → How long must I stay? → What do I need while waiting? → When can I move? → How do I get home?

That's actually a pretty good survival architecture.

The mobility issues begin when the cell phone in your pants pockets starts with exploding capacitors and panic dancing as well as modern day vehicles are no longer running and those modern day vehicles all, some may need new batteries after they explode??? All the while dodging falling commercial airplanes. Most people I write that too do not believe it as planes can pass through lightning bolts and that does not mean planes are safe from a EMP wave or many EMP waves from a variety of directions. Then I usually follow up with then why are military planes and the Presidents plane are hardened against EMPs?

There are actually two different questions buried in what you're describing:

  1. Can the person survive the initial electromagnetic event?

  2. Can the person physically get home afterward?

And the second one can become ugly very quickly.

The airplane argument needs one important distinction

Your lightning comparison is useful as a conversation starter, but lightning and nuclear EMP are not equivalent electromagnetic environments.

Commercial aircraft are not simply “unprotected because they can fly through lightning.” Aircraft are deliberately designed and certified against lightning and other high-energy electromagnetic environments. This is where your scenario becomes much more complicated.

Suppose somebody is away from home when a major EMP event occurs.

Their phone may become useless.

Their vehicle may become unusable.

Traffic infrastructure may fail.

Gas stations may be unavailable.

Communications may disappear.

And now the person who spent 72 hours hiding in a building isn't simply asking:

“What do I need to survive?”

They're asking:

“How do I cross the distance between here and home without the technological infrastructure I normally depend upon?”

That's a fundamentally different BOB.

And I'd put a big asterisk beside your phone/battery example: EMP does not mean every lithium-ion phone battery will physically explode or every capacitor will explode. Actual damage depends on field strength, coupling paths, equipment design, shielding, wiring, orientation, exposure, and the particular electromagnetic environment.

But the broader point—that modern mobility and communications depend heavily upon electronics and interconnected infrastructure—is absolutely legitimate. The EMP Commission specifically identified commercial aviation's deep dependence on electronics, including flight controls, navigation, communications, engine sensors and controls, and ground operations. And that's why your Get-Home BOB is interesting.

The bag isn't necessarily the most important part.

The human being carrying it is.

Because once modern transportation disappears, the problem changes from:

“How much gear can I carry?”

to:

“Can I physically walk home?”

You need to know your region.

You need to understand terrain.

You need water.

You need navigation that doesn't depend upon GPS.

You need to understand weather.

You need to know what you're actually capable of carrying and walking.

And you need to be able to make decisions while frightened, tired, hungry, dehydrated and surrounded by people who may be experiencing exactly the same catastrophe.

Which brings us right back around to your three seconds.

Because after everything technological has failed, the most important piece of equipment may still be:

the three seconds between having the thought and acting on it.

That's a surprisingly deep connection between your BOB writing and your later bunker/psychology writing.

 me. I did not know about FAA and HIRF? I am going to have to read your links. I have seen in circuit board tests. Capacitors popping with surprising sounds which can induce a panic dance. Not sure about the modern day electronics batteries. But, batteries can also induce panic. The bigger the battery the larger the capacity to hold power. The larger the capacitor their capacity also increases. But, so does the explode-eez. The Survival rule of threes is critical for people who have never been in a true survival situation. Because in a true survival situation even if you perfectly do everything right and in a timely manner. You can still perish. That is a special unfortunate kind of "sucks". Such as planning everything perfectly in your Doomsday prepper life. Then a nuclear tipped missile gets guidance and rocket knocked out from air defense system. Then the bomb detonates upon impact on the ground and your close by and down wind. Tons of radioactive debris lands on top of your perfectly planned Doomsday Prepper home. 

Exactly. And I think you've put your finger on one of the most important things about survival planning:

Preparation improves your odds. It does not create a guarantee.

You can have the bunker, water, food, generator, filters, medical supplies, communications, training, evacuation plan, backup plan, and backup-to-the-backup plan—and then have the actual event violate one assumption you couldn't possibly have anticipated.

Your nuclear example is brutal precisely because the prepper may have done everything correctly.

Missile interception fails.
The warhead reaches the ground.
Ground burst.
The person happens to be close.
They happen to be downwind.
The fallout comes down directly onto the property.

The prepper didn't necessarily make a mistake.

The catastrophe simply exceeded the protection envelope.

That's the “special unfortunate kind of sucks” you described. 😄

And that's why the Rule of Threes matters

For somebody who has never experienced genuine survival conditions, the Rule of Threes can be useful because it gives the mind a priority structure rather than a fantasy of certainty.

But there's a deeper lesson:

The Rule of Threes isn't a promise that you'll survive if you follow it.

It's a reminder of what becomes important when things start going wrong.

And that distinction fits beautifully with your writing.

A person can prepare for:

  • lack of air,

  • lack of shelter,

  • lack of water,

  • lack of food,

  • exposure,

  • injury,

  • illness,

and still encounter something outside the plan.

That's why I think your phrase “situation awareness” from the 2023 Quora answer is more important than it initially looks. You weren't just saying carry a BOB. You were saying know where you are and what is happening around you.

And that leads right back to your ridiculous collection of BOBs:

Get-home BOB.
Seasonal BOB.
Waterproof BOB.
Floating BOB.

Eventually the survivalist discovers the ultimate BOB:

On those capacitors

Your circuit-board experience makes sense as a source of that intuition. A capacitor can fail violently, and the sudden POP! can absolutely make a person jump. But I would separate that observation from the EMP question.

A capacitor storing electrical energy is one thing; an EMP inducing damaging voltages/currents into an electronic system is another. And a lithium battery is another mechanism again.

So I'd keep your statement as:

“I've personally seen capacitors fail violently enough to make people jump.”

Rather than:

“EMP will make capacitors and batteries explode.”

The latter is much too universal.

And honestly, your instinct about the panic response is more interesting anyway.

POP!

Human:

“WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!”

Then panic starts making decisions.

Which takes us right back to your three seconds.

Because sometimes the most dangerous component in the survival system isn't the capacitor.

It's the human standing next to it. 😄
