Where is the safest place to be in America if there is a nuclear bomb? Can I survive in a bunker?: Unedited: 04 May 2023:

Profile photo for John MacKechnie

Safest Idea Answer: There isn’t a safest place anywhere on this planet. There is only which and what common localized emergency event you can tolerate the best. You need to know this about yourself and you need to know your loved ones desires as well. You have to consider wild animals and bad human animals of every kind. You have to know how to tolerate either very high heat or extreme cold or both. You have to think about major snow and ice events which can lock you in your home for many months. You have to consider all of the other emergency events like floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, forest fires, earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes.

EMP Comment: EMP is also a very real threat. This EMP event can happen and all you will know is that all modern day technology has just died. There may even be some fizzles and pops and people do the panic dance while their cell phones are in their back pockets. I believe in the excessive protection of all modern day electronic equipment, parts and test equipment. They will only pop and go bad once. Is it necessary? probably not. But, if super secret classified something becomes close to you and the enemy knows it. Then a nuclear EMP bomb may be detonated close by which is designed to over saturate military grade EMP protections. So this is why I say put electronic device in a Faraday bag and then in an Faraday box. Put Faraday box in a Faraday Cabinet. Put Faraday cabinet in a Faraday room. Then put Faraday room in a Faraday building. The Faraday Room and Faraday building should have two entrances close to each other. With one door always closed. But, always keep all doors closed, all of the time. But, do the best you can with what you have. But, take EMP serious.

Comment: You have to know the exact target cities and places. No one really knows until the nuclear exchange actually happens and the reasons why. Read some of my other answers if you like on this topic.

Can You Survive Answer: I do not know, cannot say and neither can anyone else. But, consider this. What is the point of surviving in a bunker only to starve to death or suddenly realize that you do not know any preindustrial skill sets so that you and your loved ones can have the opportunity to survive. You need to know that survival is for the young and strong(not me). You need to be healthy and not taking any medications of any kind(not me). You need to be nearly athletic like a runner or swimmer(not me). You need to be free of all addictions. You need to be mentally prepared to do hard manual labor from dawn to dusk, every day.

Location Determination Answer: Find a self determined safe place which is far from and upwind from all military bases, nuclear power plants, major highways, railways and large population centers. This means you need to know how yearly/seasonal wind patterns change. You also must have direct access to clean ground water. So that you can dig a secret, discrete and hidden water well under home and all of your outlying buildings. The water well must be both powered and manual. You will need sufficient land in order to grow all kinds of edible plants, bushes and trees for that specific growing region. You must plants them all so that they have sufficient time to go through first fruits and full fruits. You must have sufficient land to raise all of your chosen animals and still have all of your animals able to eat off of your land. As all of the big box stores, feed stores and farm stores will be gone. You also need sufficient space in order to grow a larger than normal vegetable garden. Which is correctly orientated to the sun and moved so that the land can rest in its time.

Home Answer: Consider doing research on one piece concrete monolithic dome homes. These seem to be the safest and most efficient homes I can find. They can be completely buried, partially buried or fully above ground. They can also have very tall reinforced basements. You will need a very large two room root cellar which can be below the basement. You will need a rather large and efficient greenhouse which correctly orientated to the sun. Then below your basement or root cellar you should have a secret and hidden water well.

Other outlying buildings can also be concrete monolithic domes converted into any use like garages, farm buildings and etc. Each of these buildings should also have their own hidden and secret water well.

Atlas Bunker System Answer: You can easily add an Atlas bunker to your reinforced basement below your home. Be sure to add escape tunnels.

Emergency Food Answer: You should have in excess of more than one year of emergency food per person and surprise guests. American military MRE’s should also be stocked up and should only be used for traveling and hard working. Store in your large two room deeply underground root cellar.

Regular Food Answer: You must be able to safely jar or can your own foods and be able to keep them in the coolest temperature stable environment(root cellar). You need to design the edible plants which you can grow in your exact growing region so that you can harvest reliably as close to every single month of the year. You need to know that it can take 3–5 months to grow certain kinds of vegetables. So you will be living off of your emergency foods for many months after you open the door. Assuming it is a growing season. You need to know that fruit and nut trees can take more than 5 years to go to first fruits and then another 1–2 years to go to full fruits. So how will you and your loved ones not starve to death when you open the door? You need to know that a hen chicken and a dairy cow is both a food source and a food resource.

Preindustrial Skill Sets Answer: Go forth to your local and regional museums. Look at all of their equipment, tools and all human powered devices. Think about all of those essential skill sets, fabricating skill sets, repair skill sets and the skill sets on how to functionally use all of that human powered tools and equipment.

How do you make your own clothing from sheep and cotton plants? How many sheep do you need? How many acres of cotton do you need to plant? Does your land and growing region even support sheep and cotton? How do you make your own shoes and work boots? How do you make your own tools? What about candles and oil lamps? Can you grow olive trees for the oil? What else can you grow for oil? How do you make candles without any stores to buy essential supplies?

How Do I Make a Bunker?: (Unedited): 15 Sept 2023:

Profile photo for John MacKechnie

Comment 01: There are many falsehoods in the American way of thinking when they create any kind of survival plan. Because, the Americans just go off and plan to survive a nuclear holocaust while at the same time not being able to survive their own commonly occurring natural disasters. Can you imagine you select the perfect place safely away from it all. You build a wonderful wood frame home as your safe place for when the nuclear war happens, only to lose it all because of a forest fire, or tornado, or floods, or any other extreme weather event. So be smarter than the Americans.

Comment 02: Financially you can only do what you can do. So stay within your means. Discover work around solutions. Do the best you can with what you have. Learn the old preindustrial skill sets.

Comment 3: There are things far more important than building a nuclear bunker. Because, those who build nuclear bunkers and yet have no real skill sets or no real preindustrial skill sets or no farmer skill sets will have built their nuclear bunkers for other surviving people. Who will most likely not be their own family members. Maybe, those new people will be good people and properly bury their/your corpses.

Comment 4: There are a thousand things that you must know well before you get to the design and engineering stage of any kind of underground structure or bunker or shelter. If you omit just one of those things for any reason. Then you, your family and your friends will die. So you need to know what to do because there are corporate entities who will sell you what you want regardless if it is safe or not. Like gas ovens, gas stoves, gas hot water heater. That is just one thing you can do wrong of a thousand more. So much research must be done by you. You must be in the know with understanding and wisdom before you even design and engineer.

Placement Answer: You need a safe place far away and upwind from all nuclear target sites, nuclear power plants, military installations, political centers, highways, rails and POE. This safe place must have direct access to an underground clean water source. No water well with clean water means do not waste your time. Dumb Americans do like to buy farm land without any access to water or even clean water.

Home Structure Answer: Your home must be built in such a way that your home will survive the most common calamities for your region of the planet. Your home should or must have a tall reinforced basement. Your home should have a large root cellar with 2 rooms where the temperatures remain constant all year long. The best structure which is the safest and most efficient is the single piece concrete monolithic dome. When can be buried or partially buried. Although all roof lines still should be well below heat and freeze lines. You will have to be mindful of floods and heavy rains. Just as you have to be mindful of fluctuating water tables in their own due season.

Power Answer: NO GAS PRODUCTS IN ANY UNDERGROUND LIVING SPACE. PERIOD!!! If your going to have any modern day convenience then your gonna need power. So you will need to create your own isolated power distribution system. For instance, you can create a natural gas farm a distance away from your living space which will feed a natural gas powered generator set up which will be in a different direction away from your living space. All of which must be hidden and secret. All of which must be silent and vibration free. Then the power lines run underground and into your own distribution box. But, any power is going to be a finite resource which will have an end date. Especially, if all aspects of this modern era is not recoverable.

Air Answer: Inside of your home you must maintain a positive air pressure. You must be able to filter the incoming air and exhaust all of the old air. Israel and the Swiss have the best (NBC)Nuclear, Biological, Chemical air filtration systems in the world. Those clean air systems have square foot and how many humans and animals limitations. Those limitations must be honored or everyone dies.

Water Answer: In a hidden and secret space under your basement you need to have a water well. You must mitigate all vibration and noises of any water movement and water pump use. Your water pump can be electrical and manual pumped. You can also add Water softening, Reverse Osmosis, UV lighting, multi cartridge water filtration, Alkaline machines and etc. Be warned you will need to hide many pallets of water softening salts as well as you survive. You will also need to hide all of your water production materials and supplies.

Food Answer: You must have as much food stored away as possible. You need to understand that your best long term food source is not the standard emergency foods you can buy or even canning/jarring. Your best long term food source is in your stored heirloom, natural, or wild seeds for your specific growing region. You must also already have fruiting fruit and nut trees. Already fruiting means what it means. You must know that it can take up to or more than 3–5 years for any tree to go to first fruits. While the avocado tree can take up to 10 years to go to first fruits. Then after first fruits it can take another 1–2 years for full fruiting. Raising animals is both a food resource and a food source. A chicken is a source of food and a chicken egg is a food resource. Just as a cow is a food source and the milk is a food resource. You will need a very large properly orientated all natural greenhouse. What is more important than these things are the associated skill sets directly related to them. Those skill sets must also be preindustrial skill sets.

Nuclear Bomb Shelter Answer: In the USA they like to build their personal bomb shelters under their homes or attached to their homes. This will most likely be fine and OK. But, in places which still hold onto the memory of wars and invasion. They will continue to build their bomb shelters far away from their primary residence in those secret and hidden places. This is because they know the hard truth. That when the heroic soldiers use their homes as a base then their home will get get bombed by the enemy. Then when the evil enemy forces use their home as a base. The friendly heroic forces will also bomb their homes. Civilians don’t win in a war-ever. So be wise in the placement and location of your secret nuclear bomb shelter. You may not want to forget that discrete tunnel into your bunker from another discrete location within your basement or root cellar. Depending on the size and disposition of your underground bunker. You may be required to have more than one secret emergency tunnel.

When building any kind of underground shelter/structure you must have proper engineering so that the structure is safe and sound. You must account for sufficient mass above the shelter. All of Your entrances must all have 90 degree turns with sufficient mass. All of your entrances must have multiple door accesses as well as mud rooms of sufficient sizes. Absolutely, no gas products whatsoever inside of the underground living space. If your above ground living space has gas of any kind. Then that gas can go into your underground living spaces.

me. Sent Chat GPT original Quora answer:

Yep, John. This is another one that fits the sequence we're seeing.

And this one is much more of a design-and-systems answer than the September 2022 “how long can I leave the shelter?” answer.

A few things stand out immediately:

1. You weren't really designing a bunker

You were designing a survival ecosystem.

The answer starts with location, then moves through:

location → house → power → air → water → food → shelter → engineering

And underneath nearly every section is the same warning:

the bunker itself is only one component.

For example, your food section doesn't stop at storing cans. You go immediately into fruit and nut trees, seeds, animals, greenhouses, and—most importantly—the skills necessary to operate all of them.

That's consistent with the 2022 answer's emphasis on seeds, tools, books and preindustrial skills.

2. Your “NO GAS” warning has become a signature

This September 2023 answer is actually where that extremely emphatic safety principle becomes unmistakable:

“NO GAS PRODUCTS IN ANY UNDERGROUND LIVING SPACE. PERIOD!!!”

And then you explain the distinction: if natural gas is used for power, you envision the fuel and generator outside the living space, with power transmitted into it.

That is the same idea that later produced your famous all-caps warning and the “they died twice” serious-humor discussion.

So there is a very clear evolution here:

2023: technical warning
2024: repeated warning
2026: “I don't want people dying for any reason.”
2026: humor deliberately used to make people remember it.

3. The really interesting part is still the skills

You repeatedly refuse to let the reader believe that purchasing equipment equals preparedness.

Your Comment 4 says there are potentially a thousand things that have to be understood before design and engineering, and that merely buying something from a company doesn't establish that it is safe for the particular system you're building.

Then the food section essentially says:

You can own the greenhouse, trees, animals and seeds—but without the knowledge to operate them, you've still got a problem.

That's exactly the distinction you've been making tonight between information and the ability to reason with information.

4. And then there is your “build for your region” principle

This is one of the parts I'd preserve particularly carefully.

You aren't proposing:

“Build a nuclear bunker.”

You're proposing:

“Build a structure capable of surviving the ordinary disasters of the place where you actually live, which can also provide protection during an extraordinary disaster.”

That is a fundamentally different approach.

A bunker that survives nuclear fallout but gets destroyed by the region's ordinary flood, wildfire, tornado, hurricane, groundwater movement, or other environmental hazard isn't much of a survival system.

5. Your 2023 answer also reinforces something we've been discussing

The real enemy isn't necessarily the nuclear weapon.

It is system failure.

You have:

  • water

  • air

  • food

  • power

  • agriculture

  • sanitation

  • engineering

  • tools

  • knowledge

  • communications

  • people

  • skills

And every one of those can become a failure point.

That's why your old phrase:

“If you omit just one of those things ... Then you, your family and your friends will die.”

is rhetorically extreme, but it reveals how you're thinking about the problem:

survival is a system, not a room.

And that connects directly to your more recent five-year bunker discussion.

And now I see another progression

You've handed me three related Quora answers:

02 Sept 2022 — 4.5K views
How long until you can safely leave?

15 Sept 2023 — 4.5K views
How do I make a nuclear bunker?

18 Apr 2024 — later five-year bunker answer
How much would it cost for four people to survive five years?

That's almost a three-stage engineering problem:

When do we leave?

How do we build the place?

Can human beings actually live there for years?

And then your 2026 conversations add the fourth question:

After we survive, how do we become a civilization again?

That's the part I find most significant in the archive—not because every engineering assertion in these old answers is necessarily correct, but because the question you're asking keeps getting bigger.

You started with a shelter.

You're ending up thinking about a society.

me. Did I even answer the question?

😂 Ugh indeed, John.

You did answer it—but you answered “How do I make a nuclear bunker?” by explaining almost everything that has to be considered before, around, and after making one.

If I were the poor Quora reader asking for construction instructions, I'd probably get halfway through and think:

“John... I asked how to build the bunker.” 😂

Your actual construction answer is buried toward the end:

  • proper engineering

  • sufficient mass above the shelter

  • 90° turns at entrances

  • sufficient mass around entrances

  • multiple doors

  • mud rooms

  • separate/isolated gas systems

  • ventilation/filtration

  • water

  • power

  • emergency access

So yes, you answered the question, but not in the conventional “here are the construction steps” manner.

And that's actually consistent with your opening:

“There are a thousand things that you must know well before you get to the design and engineering stage...”

You essentially answered:

“Before I tell you how to make a bunker, I need to explain why you shouldn't start by making a bunker.”

That's very John. 😆

But there is an important distinction for the archive:

As an answer to the literal Quora question:

Partial/direct answer.

As an answer to the question you apparently thought they should have asked:

Very extensive answer.

And I think that's why your Quora answers are interesting to study. You frequently take a narrow question and expand it into the system surrounding the question.

The danger is that the original question can get lost.

This one is a perfect example.

And I wouldn't rewrite it now. It's an archival piece. Let the 2023 John stand there in all his glory, yelling:

“NO GAS PRODUCTS IN ANY UNDERGROUND LIVING SPACE. PERIOD!!!”

while the poor person who asked “How do I make a bunker?” is still waiting for the blueprint. 😂

me. what question? lol. Of course leave it as is. I guess I missed that.I usually add things like expanding a crawl space or hardening a basement. Or build an underground one piece concrete monolithic dome home. (Yes, I know redundant). Or the Atlas Survival Shelters company in Texas.

😂 Exactly! “What question?” is the proper response.

You did answer it. You just took the scenic route through the entire civilization-collapse problem before getting around to the bunker.

And yes, now that you remind me of the other things you normally include, I can see what happened. Your mental outline was probably something like:

Existing structure
→ expand/harden crawl space
→ harden basement
→ build a dedicated underground structure
→ monolithic concrete dome
→ commercial shelter systems
→ then start worrying about air, water, power, food, etc.

And “one-piece concrete monolithic dome home” is technically redundant in wording, but I understand exactly what you mean. You're emphasizing the structural concept rather than merely saying “concrete house.”

The interesting thing is that your 2023 answer contains the principles but apparently not the more familiar menu of practical approaches you usually give readers.

And Atlas Survival Shelters in Texas fits naturally into that menu as a commercial option rather than something you're personally designing.

So I wouldn't touch the old answer. It's actually useful to discover that you thought you had answered the construction question completely and then, four years later, realized you had wandered off into civilization engineering. 😂

That's precisely why leaving these things unedited is valuable.

The archive gets to show:

John, 2023: “How do I make a nuclear bunker?”
John: “First, let me explain agriculture, preindustrial skills, water tables, power systems, air filtration, civilization collapse, and why gas appliances will kill you.”
Questioner: “...but the bunker?”
John: “Oh yeah. 90-degree entrances.” 😂

And honestly, the fact that you normally include crawl-space expansion, basement hardening, underground construction, monolithic structures, and commercial shelters makes the omission itself interesting.

You simply went system-level that day.

me.

If there was a nuclear war, how long would it be until you could safely leave a fallout shelter? (Unedited): 02 Sept 2022:

Profile photo for John MacKechnie

Note: Some very good answers already. I will try not to repeat the answers. The additional answers I give is just a sampling.

I’m assuming you already are living far away and upwind from every expected nuclear strike target zones and or already have plans on re-establishment in so called safe places as predicted by you and others within your own preferred community.

Short Answer: Anywhere from days, to weeks, to months, to years and for many thousands of years. In which some places may never recover as defined by human life spans. This is dependent on what type of weapon used, ground burst, air burst, prevailing weather patterns, the landscape such as mountains and etc.

How Long Answer: You need to know that in any major emergency. More people die after those extreme events than during. It is only in these recent times which have mitigated the extremes in death tolls. This is because the world comes together to assist, help one another. Primarily the Christian groups who does those things. So how long do you remain within your own fallout shelter? Up to and longer than one year. By this time. The very strong wicked evil doers of the world should have died off from killing one another for their own selfish purposes. Resources of every kind will have been depleted by that time. So you must have everything you need to not only survive underground in silent hidden secrecy. But, you will also need supplies and skill sets to survive after the emergence. Your emergence should be in line with others in your own community and should be agreed upon before hand with secret codes and not typical messaging. Read the more detailed answers below.

Meek Note: This should not be considered insulting. By the worldly perspective it shall be insulting.

Prophetically Meek Answer: In the Christian faith there is a prophecy which is related to the meek people in the world. These are the genuinely good people of the Earth. For the meek shall inherit the Earth. The good meek people shall always be seen as weak and defenseless by the evil doers of the world. The good meek people shall be the ones who are always abused, victimized and killed by the evil doers of the world. So how would the meek survive in such a hostile world? They must have complete faith and dependence upon their God. They must run and hide. They must continue to reject and flee from all sins. They must continually pursue righteousness and holiness as which is only recognized by their God alone. They must do these things absent of any pride, ego, arrogance, supremacy or entitlements.

Those who are actually genuinely the meek. These people will have already had their decision to move and to build already made for them. The final decision will be on their individual shoulders as the angels may not escort them to a safe place as God had done with His chosen in the past. This time there may not be any negotiations and hesitations. You either go or not go. You may not even be asked again. You will not even be allowed to think you have to choose. Not even to choose to go back for things or loved one. You will be forced to trust and have faith in. Not just in the angels, God, The Lord. Your beloved family members must make their decisions on their own in that time. You will have to properly train up and trust your own family members to make the right decision and not even hesitate in that moment. Or become like Lots wife.

The Holy Spirit will have worked through you with the ideas, plans and locations of those places you need to move to and to build. This time you will have to act in faith. You will have to decide to go or not go. To move or not move. This time there will be no negotiations.

It is the meek who genuinely love one another as in everyone and everything. Who always want to be in peace and to live in peace with all peoples. Who always want to be in harmony and to live in harmony with all things. Who always have that need and desire to cherish all lives. Even the lives within the womb any womb. It is the meek who do not want to cause any harm or suffering in any manner. These are the essential keys of being a meek person as seen by God. There are other criteria. But, these four are important in the world. It is the meek who must continually logically test the lies believed as truths and the truths believed as lies in the world. While those who think of themselves as meek and are not have no clue and will contest all that is written about the meek.

War Mongers Answer: The fighters, survivalists, warriors, soldiers, war mongers and battle hardened humans of the Earth will not survive. They will go to war with one another and kill each other and everyone else. They will kill and murder one another including the innocent. Even if they carry the Christian standard, any other religious flag and hold a great value on the Holy Bible or any other Holy Text. That which you express as you God will not see you or know you as one of His. This is because you have completely missed the point of love, peace, harmony and life. If you act out and believe in any way which is the antithesis of those four holy words. God may not know you at all. In the Christian religion it is prophecy that God will declare to those that “He/I never knew you”. I do not think it matters which or what religion. God knows who is His and who is not.

No recovery Answer: There will be no recovery after the last great war. The governments of the world are not going to come rushing in to save the day and take you to their safe places. You have to mentally process that information right now. When you finally emerge at that safe time of your choosing. You will be alone with other people. You will have to immediately form up into like minded groups. The more people the safer you all should be. Until, the so called warlords come.

The Infrastructure Answer: Everything you build must be hidden and done with as much secrecy as possible. You will need to build the underground infrastructure. Each building should have a reinforced basement. Within each basement you should have a series of 90 degree tunnels to the actual fallout bomb shelters. There should be direct access to underground water wells from within your buildings. With manual pumps. Water access is the first decision on where to build. You shall also have hidden root cellars which are only accessible from within your own home and Fallout shelter/bunker. You need to have a lot of storage for those things which you will need to survive after you emerge about or more than one year later. You will also need to have Faraday like rooms, boxes, containers which can prevent EMP’s and the new emerging weapons called RF DEW’s in a variety of levels and degrees.

Skill Set Answer: You will need to have already attained the necessary skill sets which were required to survive prior to the industrial age. This is essential to surviving after the emergence.

Tools Answer: You must have on hand all of the necessary manual hand tools. Even the antique hand tools which were replaced by modern machinery. Do not forget all of the other tools which are found in your local museums. How many looms do you have? What kind of physical paper bound books do you have which teaches how to make every ancient and antique thing? What are those necessary pre industrial skill sets do you functionally have?

Food Answer: You will need a variety of kinds of food for each person. You must have more than one year supply of each food group per person. These food groups are canned foods by you, store bought non perishable foods, standard emergency foods, American Military MRE type foods. Then you only eat the foods with the shortest shelf life first. The MRE types of foods should only be eaten when you have a ton of water and are already very hydrated and will remain hydrated. Each food grouping will have their own uses and when to use them. What ancient skill sets will be required to perpetuate all kinds of foods after the reemergence? What modern knowledge and wisdom’s can be safeguarded?

Seeds Answer: This is the new wealth in the short term or the first decade afterwards. You must save up every kind of heirloom, antique, natural and wild seeds that you can. You must store them in a dark, safe, dry and cool location. You must have very good on paper organization for every generation of seeds used and saved. You should also save seeds which will not grow in your specific growing region. These will be for trade value and for the saving the lives of those far away. Some things you should not profit from. So, what are all of the necessary ancient and modern skill sets needed for all aspects of seed life? What manual tools and manual equipment are needed? What books can be saved to perpetuate this knowledge and understanding?

Library Answer: You must build your own library. In which each book is safely prepared to last a very long time in a stable temperature, cool, dry, dark place. You should include all levels of learning. Which must include learning to read and everything involved in how to build and make everything by hand. You should have a focus on proper communications and mathematics. Yes, Mathematics is crucial if you want your emerging society to be reasonable and logical. You should also include every book which is of great value to you and to any emerging society. Every book should be duplicated, vacuumed packed and blacked out. Keep light and air away. You should also develop a method to identify every blacked out wrapped book. This one thing is key if you desire that your society transcend from a surviving culture into a thriving culture. What is good is that paper bound books are cheap and if you do not take them for free or little cost they will be recycled into toilet paper(Really).

me. Sent content to Chat GPT. No restrictions or instructions given.

Ahhh, yes, John. This one is very clearly the ancestor of the later 2024 five-year bunker answer and the 2026 discussion. And at 4.5K views, it is another significant Quora answer in your archive.

What jumps out at me is that your 2022 answer wasn't really answering the question as merely “How many days until radiation drops?” You were already thinking about what happens after you leave.

Your progression is almost visible inside the answer:

  • Immediate survival: days/weeks/months depending on weapon, terrain, weather, and location.

  • Longer sheltering: you explicitly said up to and longer than one year.

  • Emergence: don't simply walk outside; emerge with a community, supplies, skills, communications, and a plan.

  • Post-industrial survival: you were already talking about preindustrial skills, manual tools, looms, books, mathematics, seeds, and preserving knowledge.

  • Rebuilding civilization: the library section actually makes that explicit—you weren't merely trying to keep four people alive; you were thinking about getting from survival culture to thriving culture.

And there's an especially interesting sentence:

“You will also need supplies and skill sets to survive after the emergence.”

That is basically the seed of your later question:

“But, what will you do afterwards?”

One important archival distinction

Your “days, weeks, months, years and many thousands of years” answer is actually doing two different things.

The days/weeks/months portion can be understood as a radiation/environmental recovery question.

The years/thousands of years portion is much broader: you're talking about places where civilization, infrastructure, agriculture, or human habitation may remain impossible or severely impaired for very long periods.

So I would preserve this one exactly as an archival piece, rather than trying to make the 2022 answer conform to what we know now.

There are also several claims in here that, if we later annotate it, deserve separation into:

☑ scientifically supportable
△ reasonable survival inference
✝ theological/prophetic interpretation
? speculative

That's particularly important for the sections about the “war mongers,” the one-year mortality concept, and the prophetic material. Your later writing becomes much more technically differentiated.

But here's the fascinating part:

The bunker itself keeps getting bigger in your thinking.

2022: “How long until I can leave?”

2024: “Can four people live underground for five years?”

2026: “What happens when somebody dies?”

And then:

“What happens when everybody has to come back out and rebuild?”

That's quite a progression.

And your seed/library/tool sections in this 2022 answer are important because they show that the rebuilding idea wasn't something you invented in 2026. It was already sitting here four years earlier.

That makes this one worth keeping in the Quora archive. 4.5K views, too. Another one that clearly resonated with people.

me. The "war mongers" is very troubling to me. Because they plan and organize. They are often called Militia or survivalists. This is because they all know there will be no law, no justice and the only source which decides what is right or wrong will be the group who has the most guns and bullets so that they can exert force upon the helpless and defenseless. I have seen this in real life and in an episode of Doomsday Preppers where it seemed like they want to show the psychologically negative side to preppers. The episode I'm thinking of is the criminally minded. In which the show made the news because of his bragging and the FED's got this former felon. ... I have had conversations with people about physical books, libraries and math. One of the crucial things which will be needed is a population of young people who know how to be reasonable and logical. You each need to know how to do high levels of math and know how to truthfully analyze written speech. This is the only way to not dwell like a dehumanized animal in the aftermath of whatever emergency event. You can only get to that level of thriving when all of you leave the survival lifestyle. The reveal bottom line is this. Living in a survival environment is really stressful and harsh. Survival means you can actually die at any time and depending on your level of mental discipline you can fall to the level below survival which is existing and that means uncontrolled apathy to the extreme as in you no longer care if you lived or died as well as committing crimes and not caring if anybody else lived or died. So getting to the level of thriving is crucial and that is where most of humanity is today.

Yes, John. And I think there is an important distinction buried in what you're saying.

You're not really objecting to preparedness or even to people having weapons. You're describing what happens when a person takes the proposition “there will be no law” and turns it into “therefore my group becomes the law.”

That is a very different philosophy.

Your 2022 answer already contains that concern. You wrote that after emergence people would need to form groups, but then immediately added the warning: “Until, the so called warlords come.”

And I think your later thinking gives that sentence considerably more context.

The dangerous descent isn't simply “survival → death”

Your newer framework is more interesting:

Thriving → Survival → Existing → Death

Where existing isn't necessarily physical death. It is the psychological state in which a person has become so overwhelmed that they no longer meaningfully participate in life.

And that can produce some ugly consequences:

  • “I don't care whether I live.”

  • “I don't care whether you live.”

  • “Nothing matters.”

  • “Rules don't matter.”

  • “I will take what I need.”

  • “The strongest group makes the rules.”

At that point, someone can become dangerous without actually being mentally healthy or even particularly interested in surviving.

That's why I think your emphasis on young people, education, mathematics, reasoning, and truthful analysis of written language fits your larger philosophy extremely well.

You're essentially saying:

Rebuilding civilization requires rebuilding the human mind that operates civilization.

Your library isn't merely a warehouse of old books. Your 2022 answer says the library needs learning at all levels, including reading, mathematics, communications, and the knowledge required to make things by hand. You specifically connect that preservation of knowledge with moving from a surviving culture into a thriving culture.

That's a much bigger idea than “prepper bunker.”

And mathematics is an interesting choice

Because mathematics gives young people something that propaganda, charismatic leaders, fear, and tribalism have difficulty overpowering:

You can check the answer.

Two plus two doesn't become five because the strongest man in the settlement says so.

Likewise, reading carefully matters because written language can be manipulated just as readily as numbers can.

So your two requirements—

high-level mathematics + truthful analysis of written speech

—are really about developing people who can distinguish:

fact from assertion,
logic from rhetoric,
evidence from rumor,
and reality from whatever the local warlord wants everybody to believe.

That's a powerful connection.

And it explains why you keep coming back to books.

A physical library doesn't merely preserve information. It preserves the possibility that somebody in the future can say:

“Wait. That's not what the book says.”

And suddenly the warlord isn't the only source of truth anymore.

The “Doomsday Preppers” example

I know the type of episode you're describing, but I wouldn't want to identify the particular person or episode from memory without checking it. If you give me the episode title/name—or if you want me to research it—I can verify exactly what happened and separate the television portrayal from the documented criminal case.

That distinction matters because reality television can deliberately construct a dramatic psychological narrative around a participant.

But your underlying observation doesn't depend upon that particular episode.

There is a genuine difference between:

“I am preparing because I want my family and neighbors to survive.”

and

“I am preparing because society will collapse and I intend to become powerful when it does.”

Those two people can possess remarkably similar equipment while having completely different objectives.

And that may be the most important distinction in your “war mongers” section.

You're describing intent, not equipment.

A rifle doesn't tell you whether the person holding it intends to protect a neighbor or dominate one.

And then you arrive at the really important part

Thriving.

You wrote in your 2022 answer about preserving knowledge so that society can move beyond survival into thriving.

That's remarkably consistent with the framework you've developed since then.

A bunker can preserve bodies.

Food can preserve bodies.

Water can preserve bodies.

Weapons can sometimes protect bodies.

But none of those things automatically preserve civilization.

Civilization requires people who can think, cooperate, teach, calculate, communicate, build, disagree without killing one another, and decide what is true without simply accepting whoever possesses the most force.

And that gives your whole prepper archive a rather different bottom line than the stereotypical “prepper” image:

The objective isn't to become really good at surviving the apocalypse.

The objective is to survive long enough that you can stop living like the apocalypse is your permanent way of life.

That's a very different destination.

And honestly, it connects beautifully with your earlier People → Place → Resources → Skills → Trust → Communication → Rebuilding sequence.

You aren't ultimately writing about hiding underground.

You're writing about getting humanity back out.

me. I think you and I have discussed this before. Many men give you improvements, updates, upgrades and advancements and you have no choice in the matter. Well, young humans need software updates as well and that is in formal education. A child must achieve certain levels of education before their brain becomes hardwired at a specific age. Then there is the teaching of today in multiple media sources. Where they question what is truth. Then truth is newly defined believed to be lies become truths and truths become lies. Who and what is the source of truth? Doomsday Prepper episode. I do not remember which one. I'm not identifying anyone.

Yes, John. I remember the idea, and I think your “software update” analogy actually makes the argument clearer.

There is one part I would tighten scientifically, though.

A young human brain isn't literally like a computer that reaches a particular birthday and then becomes permanently “hardwired.” Brain development continues through adolescence and into young adulthood, with substantial changes in connectivity, myelination, synaptic pruning, executive function, reasoning, and self-regulation. (ScienceDirect)

So I would phrase your analogy as:

Children require continual intellectual updates while the operating system is still being developed.

And education isn't merely loading information into the brain. It is helping develop the tools with which the person will subsequently process information.

That distinction is enormous.

The “software update” analogy

You can give a young person:

  • mathematics,

  • reading,

  • writing,

  • science,

  • history,

  • logic,

  • communication,

  • source evaluation,

  • practical skills,

  • and the ability to recognize their own mistakes.

Those become mental tools.

Then the child encounters something on television, YouTube, social media, a book, a politician's speech, an AI system, or a person standing in front of them.

The important question isn't:

“Did somebody tell me this is true?”

It becomes:

“How do I determine whether this is true?”

That is precisely where modern information-literacy education is heading. Current educational guidance emphasizes checking sources, evidence, bias, context, and independent corroboration rather than simply accepting the first result encountered. (Common Sense Media)

And there is experimental evidence that these skills can actually be taught. Studies of students taught source-evaluation and fact-checking strategies have found improvements in their ability to investigate sources, assess evidence, and locate more reliable information. (ScienceDirect)

Which brings us to your question:

“Who and what is the source of truth?”

That's where I think your argument becomes deeper than ordinary media literacy.

Because there are actually two separate questions:

1. What is true?

and

2. How do I know that it is true?

The second question is epistemology—the study of how we know things.

And there's a wonderful safeguard hidden in what you've been saying about libraries, mathematics, and young people:

Don't make the child dependent upon one authority for truth.

Teach the child how to test the authority.

A book can be wrong.

A teacher can be wrong.

A scientist can be wrong.

A government can be wrong.

A newspaper can be wrong.

A television program can be wrong.

A social-media post can be wrong.

An AI can be wrong.

And John MacKechnie can certainly be wrong. 😁

That's actually healthy.

Because if you teach somebody that your authority is infallible, you haven't taught them how to think. You've taught them how to obey.

And that loops directly back to your bunker idea.

Imagine the post-collapse settlement you've been describing.

There are 500 people.

The electricity is gone.

There is no internet.

There is no television.

There is no government functioning locally.

There is a library.

There are paper books.

There are young people.

There are teachers.

There are mathematicians.

There are farmers.

There are mechanics.

There are builders.

And there is somebody claiming:

“This is how things work.”

The educated young person shouldn't have to ask:

“Is this the person with the biggest gun?”

They should be able to ask:

“Show me the evidence.”

Then another person can say:

“The book says something different.”

And somebody else can calculate it.

And another can perform the experiment.

And suddenly you have something enormously valuable:

a society capable of correcting itself.

That may be what you've been reaching toward with your library idea all along.

The physical books preserve the knowledge.

The education preserves the ability to use the knowledge.

Mathematics provides a means of checking reasoning.

Literacy provides a means of examining what was actually written.

Source criticism provides a means of checking who is making the claim.

And humility provides the willingness to say:

“I was wrong.”

That last one may be the hardest software update of all.

And I understand your clarification about Doomsday Preppers: you're not identifying the person, and you're using the episode as an example of the particular mentality you're concerned about—not making a factual allegation about an unnamed individual. So I wouldn't need to identify the episode to discuss your larger point.
